Bathroom wall lighting sits at the intersection of two concerns that often pull in opposite directions: the desire for a considered, design-forward fitting and the practical need to meet bathroom zone requirements. Getting that balance wrong can mean a beautiful fixture that simply isn't suitable for its intended location — or a safe choice that lets the design down.
For bathroom wall lights, IP rating is the key specification to confirm before anything else. IP (Ingress Protection) rating defines how well a fitting is sealed against moisture. Zone 1 — directly above a bath or shower — requires IP45 or higher. Zone 2 — the area within 60cm of a bath or shower — typically requires IP44 as a minimum. Outside those zones, an IP20 rated fitting is generally acceptable, provided it is installed in a location free from direct water exposure.
The Visual Comfort Presidio Petite Sconce, designed by Ian K. Fowler, is rated IP20 as standard, making it suitable for use outside bathroom wet zones — for example, above a vanity mirror positioned away from the bath or shower. Importantly, an IP44-rated version is available on request, which extends its suitability to Zone 2 installations. This flexibility makes it a genuinely useful option across a wider range of bathroom layouts without compromising on its distinctive industrial-meets-vintage aesthetic.
The sconce features a slender, vertical cylindrical clear glass shade open at both top and bottom, allowing light to distribute upward and downward simultaneously — a quality that creates balanced ambient illumination rather than a single directional pool of light. A dark, matte rectangular backplate with subtle recessed geometric detailing provides the wall mounting, while a matching horizontal metal ring secures the glass at its midpoint. The result is a symmetrical, slender profile that fits comfortably in compact wall spaces. Three finishes are available: Bronze, Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass, and Polished Nickel.
The Presidio Petite Sconce is a hardwired surface-mounted fitting. It accepts an Edison-style tubular filament bulb — or an equivalent LED filament lamp — held upright within the central socket. Lamp type and wattage should be confirmed against the fixture's specification sheet before ordering. The IP44 variant should be requested at point of order; lead times may vary, so early confirmation is advised for project scheduling.
