One of the most common frustrations with pendant lighting is arriving on site with a fixture that fights your dimmer — either flickering, dropping out at low levels, or simply refusing to dim at all. Getting that right before installation saves time, money, and a lot of unnecessary stress.

For dimmable LED pendants, the dimming method matters. ELV (electronic low voltage) and TRIAC are the two most widely used phase-based dimming approaches. TRIAC dimmers are the standard trailing-edge type found in most residential dimmer switches; ELV dimmers use forward phase control and are common in higher-spec residential installs. Knowing which type your circuit uses — and confirming the fixture supports it — is the specification step most people skip.

The Visual Comfort Kai 1 Pendant, designed by Sean Lavin, takes that guesswork away. It ships with an integrated 12.5W LED module delivering 638 lumens at 3000K — a warm white tone that suits kitchens, dining rooms, and living spaces well — with a 90 CRI rating, meaning colours read accurately and naturally under its light. It is compatible with most ELV and TRIAC LED-compatible dimmers and operates on 120V.

The Kai's defining quality is its shade: a tall, elongated wire cage built from fine vertical metal rods that curve inward at each end, creating an architectural, almost sculptural silhouette. The open construction allows light to pass through the sides as a diffused ambient glow while directing more focused light downward through the base — a considered balance of ambience and task clarity. It is available in Nightshade Black or Plated Brass, each giving the piece a very different character: one minimal and graphic, the other warm and refined.

The fixture ships with 12 feet of field-cuttable black cloth cord, giving you genuine flexibility on drop height during installation. The LED module is integrated — no separate lamp to source — and the canopy is designed for standard ceiling surface mounting. No external driver is required.
