Visual Comfort Desmond Open Double Oval Lantern

Choosing a statement pendant for a double-height entrance or formal dining room carries real risk — get the scale or silhouette wrong and it either disappears into the space or overwhelms it. The Desmond is the kind of fixture that earns its position by having genuine visual presence without closing off the room around it.

Open-cage lanterns work differently from enclosed pendants. Because there is no glass, light distributes freely in all directions — wrapping the surrounding surfaces in a soft, ambient glow rather than directing a focused beam downward. This makes them particularly effective as architectural focal points in rooms where atmosphere matters as much as task illumination.

The Visual Comfort Desmond Open Double Oval Lantern is designed by Chapman & Myers and draws its inspiration from the sculptural furniture of Diego Giacometti. A large outer vertical oval cage is bisected by a single horizontal ring, which also anchors a smaller inner oval — creating a multi-dimensional, nested silhouette in thin-gauge metal. At the centre, a cluster of four candelabra-style light points with white candle sleeves provides the light source. The fixture is IP20 rated, meaning it is suited to dry interior environments only.

The Desmond is available in two finishes: Aged Iron and Gild. The Aged Iron finish gives the fixture a dark, matte quality with a modern-industrial character; the Gild option brings warmth and decorative richness suited to more classical or maximalist interiors. Both are executed in metal construction throughout, including the matching ceiling canopy, chain, and loop suspension assembly.

As an open-cage, multi-bulb pendant, the Desmond accepts candelabra-base lamps (E14 fitting). Lamps are not included. Because the bulbs are fully visible within the cage, the choice of lamp matters aesthetically — a warm filament-style LED candle will complement the design intent. The fixture is for dry interior use only (IP20) and is not suitable for bathrooms or outdoor spaces.
