A good picture light needs to do two things well: deliver directed, even light across the face of the artwork, and look considered when it's not switched on. The shade position matters — a fixed shade gives you one angle, whether it suits the piece or not. Adjustable pivots, by contrast, let you tune the beam after installation, which makes a real difference when you're working with frames of varying depth or art at different heights.

The Visual Comfort David Art Light, designed by Thomas O'Brien, addresses both requirements. The cylindrical shade with rounded ends sits on side pivots, allowing the angle to be adjusted post-installation to suit the artwork and its surroundings. The shade housing shields the light source from direct view, reducing glare and keeping the focus on what's on the wall.
