STORY
STORY
Choosing a desk lamp sounds simple — until you need it to do more than sit there looking good. Task lighting has to be directional, adjustable, and comfortable to reposition without burning your fingers or pulling the whole thing apart. Getting that wrong means a lamp that stays in one place and fights you every time you move it.
For articulated task lighting, the key decisions are reach, adjustability, and how the lamp mounts. Clamp-mounted lamps fix to a desk edge, shelf, or tabletop without permanent installation — no drilling, no commitment. The light source type matters too: an E27 socket (the standard screw-fit bulb fitting found in most domestic lamps) keeps future bulb replacement simple and gives you control over output as LED options evolve.
The Stilnovo Topo Desk Lamp, designed by Joe Colombo in 1970, answers those questions with a design that has lost none of its relevance. Two articulated metal arms connected by rotating black polyethylene joints give the shade a wide range of positions — extended, angled, or pulled in close. The black aluminium screw clamp mounts cleanly to most desk or shelf edges, and a thermally insulated black handle on the shade lets you reposition it safely without interruption. The lamp ships with a 7W 2700K E27 LED bulb, delivering warm, focused light from the outset. Rated IP20, it is designed for dry indoor environments.
The shade's form is a direct nod to 1960s sports car design — the horizontal slits across its upper surface echo the air vents of that era's bodywork, while the interior is finished in white to maximise light reflection toward the task. The result is a lamp that earns its place on a desk through engineering logic as much as visual character. It is available in five finishes: Red, White, Glossy Black, Green, and Chrome.
No separate driver or transformer is required — the lamp runs directly from a standard mains socket via the integrated cord. The E27 bulb is included, so it is ready to use straight from the box. Being IP20 rated, Topo is suited to dry indoor settings only: home offices, studios, libraries, and similar environments.
At Lightsource Studio, we specify products like Topo because they solve real problems without compromise — a genuinely useful, design-literate lamp that earns its place in a considered interior. We can help you confirm the right finish for your project, manage lead times, and ensure it lands on site when you need it.
