Elstead Chicago Outdoor Post Lantern

Choosing an outdoor post lantern that holds its own against the elements without losing its design integrity is harder than it looks. Too many options sacrifice character for weatherproofing, or weatherproofing for character. Neither is a good trade.

For exterior post lighting, IP rating is the first checkpoint — IP44 means the fixture is protected against solid objects over 1mm and water splashing from any direction, making it suitable for covered and exposed outdoor positions alike. Beyond protection, the form and light quality of the lantern determine whether it actually enhances the space or simply occupies it.

The Elstead Chicago Outdoor Post Lantern answers both concerns well. From Elstead Lighting — one of the UK's most established decorative lighting manufacturers — the Chicago range brings a classical architectural lantern form to exterior specification. The fixture features a multi-tiered, scalloped roof cap with a pointed finial, four curved vertical ribs holding the seeded glass shade, and a fluted pedestal base that flares to a square mounting plate with pre-drilled corner fixing holes. Seeded glass — clear glass containing small decorative air bubbles — diffuses the light source gently, adding texture and warmth to the emitted ambience without obscuring it entirely.

The Chicago post lantern is finished in Textured Black, a robust exterior-grade metal finish that suits both traditional and contemporary architectural contexts. Its classical silhouette reads well against stonework, rendered walls, timber structures, and formal garden planting alike.

The fixture is rated IP44 and constructed from metal throughout. It is designed to house a single lamp, visible through the clear seeded glass enclosure. Lamp type and driver requirements should be confirmed at point of specification — Elstead's technical documentation will confirm compatible sources. The square base plate mounts flat to a post or pillar surface, with pre-drilled holes at each corner for straightforward installation.

At Lightsource Mallorca, we work with Elstead's portfolio precisely because it spans genuine decorative quality and practical specification reliability. The Chicago lantern is a considered choice for exterior paths, gate piers, and garden structures where the fitting needs to earn its place visually as well as functionally — and where you want the installation to go smoothly without chasing compatibility questions after the fact.
