Large-surface ambient lighting is one of the harder briefs to solve well. Flat panels can feel clinical, and multiple spotlights rarely give you the seamless, sky-like wash that architectural spaces often call for. Getting the diffusion right — soft, even, without hotspots — requires both the right material and the right form.

The key here is diffusion: how light spreads from its source across a surface before reaching the eye. A highly diffusive face material removes bright points and creates a consistent glow. The Planum achieves this through a painted stainless steel mesh — an industrial material that, when formed with subtle vertical ridges and valleys, behaves more like a textile than a metal panel, scattering integrated LED light evenly across its entire face.

The A-Emotional Light Planum is a surface-mounted LED wall and ceiling light designed by Arturo Álvarez. Its flat, low-profile panel form is handmade in Spain, with the characteristic stainless steel mesh finished in a matte off-white that reads as gently translucent when illuminated. The vertical relief pattern across the surface gives the light a rhythmic, organic quality — less architectural hardware, more luminous surface.

The design is intentionally minimal and slab-like, which means multiple Planum units can be arranged side by side to cover extended wall or ceiling planes — creating what the designer describes as authentic skies of light in architectural environments. The flush-mount installation keeps projection into the room to a minimum, suited to spaces where visual calm matters.
