STORY
STORY
Decorative wall lights live or die by the quality of light they cast on the surrounding surfaces. Too stark, and they flatten a room. Too diffuse, and they dissolve into the background. The real challenge is finding a piece that contributes atmosphere and acts as a focal point in its own right.
In decorative lighting, the shade is the story. The material, form, and layering of a shade determine whether the light spills softly or harshly, whether shadows are flat or dimensional, and whether the fixture reads as art or furniture. Mesh shades work by filtering and scattering light across thousands of tiny apertures, creating graduated warmth rather than a point source — and when the mesh is sculpted into three dimensions, the effect deepens considerably.
The A-Emotional Light Mytilus Wall Light is a decorative wall-mounted luminaire designed by Arturo Ãlvarez. Inspired by the seabed in motion — waves, marine currents, and the organic geometry of underwater life — the Mytilus takes its name and form from the world beneath the surface. A single, asymmetrical piece of fine-gauge metal mesh is sculpted into an undulating, shell-like shade, with a central opal globe diffuser that conceals the light source and ensures even, glare-free illumination. The result is layered, dimensional light that shifts as you move around it.
The design avoids hard lines entirely. Overlapping folds of the mesh create a moiré effect — a subtle visual interference pattern that adds depth and texture as viewing angles change — giving the piece a handcrafted, naturalistic quality that reads differently under different light conditions. The shade is finished in a uniform white or off-white tone that keeps the focus on form rather than colour.
As with all specification-grade decorative pieces, it is worth confirming lamp type, driver requirements, and wall-mounting details before installation. We recommend contacting our team for full technical data, compatibility notes, and lead-time guidance before specifying the Mytilus on a live project.
At Lightsource Studio, our role is to bridge the gap between a beautiful design choice and a successful installation. The Mytilus is the kind of piece that rewards careful placement — a statement without shouting — and we can help you position it correctly within a wider lighting scheme, advise on the right control setup, and ensure it arrives on schedule for your project timeline.
