Visual Comfort Mercer Square Box Wall Light

Wall lights often look right in a mood board and wrong on the wall. Scale, projection, and light quality all matter — and with a fixture this substantial (30.5cm square, 4.1kg), getting the placement and lamp choice right before install saves a costly revisit.

For a decorative wall sconce like this, the key decisions are mounting position, lamp wattage, and the quality of diffusion. The Mercer uses frosted glass panels to soften the output of two E27 lamps — E27 being the standard screw-cap fitting found in most domestic bulbs — spreading light gently into the room rather than creating harsh hotspots. IP20 means it's rated for dry indoor spaces: living rooms, hallways, bedrooms, and bathrooms outside the protected zones.

The Visual Comfort Mercer Square Box Wall Light is a design by Thomas O'Brien — one of America's most respected lighting designers — and it shows in the detail. The box-lantern form is flattened into a low-profile wall-hugging shape, with a hinged front panel secured by a visible latch, making lamp replacement straightforward without tools or guesswork. Translucent glass panels diffuse light on three visible faces, creating a warm, even glow. The backplate is a full 30.5cm square, requiring a solid wall surface and careful positioning over a suitable back box.

This is a fixture with a clear design personality — part traditional lantern, part considered craft object. The visible mechanical detailing (hinges, latch) gives it an artisanal, slightly industrial edge that works in both contemporary and transitional interiors. The current available appearance is Chrome, lending it a cooler, refined finish that pairs well with marble, brushed steel, and pale palettes.

Two E27 keyless sockets accept up to 40W per lamp — keyless meaning there is no switch built into the socket itself, so the fitting is controlled at wall level. Lamps are not included, which gives you the freedom to choose output, colour temperature, and dimming behaviour. If you want to dim this fixture, ensure your chosen E27 LED lamps are dimmable and compatible with your wall dimmer — not all LEDs behave the same on all dimmers, and it's worth checking before you commit. The fixture is Class I, meaning it requires an earth connection at the wall.

At Lightsource Mallorca, we help you specify fixtures like this with confidence — matching lamp type to dimmer, confirming install constraints, and coordinating delivery so your project stays on track. The Mercer is a considered choice: a designer piece with real technical clarity behind it, value-engineered for projects where quality and schedule both matter.
