Stilnovo Valigia Table & Floor Lamp

For a lamp that functions as a statement object, understanding its light output is worth a moment. The vaulted, opaque metal shade projects light exclusively downwards, making it best suited to task-adjacent positions — a reading corner, a side table, a studio floor. It is not a room-fill source; it is a deliberate, directional one. Paired with ambient sources, it earns its place.

The Stilnovo Valigia Table & Floor Lamp was designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1977 — a founding figure of the Memphis Group, whose work transformed functional objects into cultural commentary. The lamp's semi-cylindrical sheet metal shade, matte dark grey finish, and vivid red tubular arches are immediately recognisable as products of that movement: geometric, high-contrast, and entirely unapologetic. The carrying handle mounted at the apex is not decorative — it is the concept. Valigia means suitcase. The lamp is meant to move with you.

The design language is architectural and irreverent in equal measure. Red glossy tubular arches sweep from the shade down to four straight legs, the whole structure resembling a small bridge or portal. One flat end plate carries engraved text: "VALIGIA DESIGN ETTORE SOTTSASS 1977 STILNOVO ITALIA" — a signature rather than a label. No finish or size variants are listed for this edition.
