Choosing a table lamp that earns its place in a considered interior isn't always straightforward. The wrong base finish can fight the room rather than anchor it, and a shade that's too opaque kills the warmth you were after in the first place.

For table lamps like this, the balance between the base and the shade is everything. A diffusing fabric shade softens the light output — reducing glare and creating ambience rather than harsh direct illumination. The base material and finish then carry the decorative weight, becoming as much a sculptural object as a light source.

The Elstead Nicolls Table Lamp answers both sides of that equation. The vase-shaped base is formed from textured, mottled mercury glass — a technique that creates a shimmering, multi-tonal silver effect that catches and reflects light rather than simply sitting under it. A cream fabric drum shade sits above, diffusing the light from the internal bulb gently and evenly. A silver-toned metal base plate and neck tie the composition together, with a small decorative finial completing the top of the shade.

In terms of style, the Nicolls sits comfortably in what designers call a transitional category — classically shaped vessel base, contemporary drum shade — which means it works across a wide range of interior schemes, from relaxed coastal bedrooms to more formal living spaces. No variant options are noted for this model.

As a table lamp with a fabric shade over an internal bulb, lamp choice will influence both colour temperature and overall warmth — a warm white source (typically around 2700K) will complement the mercury glass finish most effectively. Please confirm lamp type and fitting with us at point of specification if you'd like guidance.

FAQs

What type of light effect does the Nicolls table lamp produce?

The cream fabric drum shade diffuses light from the internal bulb, softening the output to create a warm, ambient glow rather than direct or harsh illumination — ideal for bedside tables, consoles, or living room surfaces.

What makes the mercury glass base distinctive?

The base uses a mottled, textured glass surface treated to produce a shimmering, multi-tonal silver effect. It catches and reflects surrounding light, giving it a decorative presence even when the lamp is switched off.

Is the Nicolls suitable for a bedroom or living room?

Yes. Its transitional style — a classically shaped vessel base paired with a contemporary drum shade — makes it versatile across bedroom, living room, hallway, and study settings.

What lamp type should I use with the Nicolls?

Lamp type and fitting details should be confirmed at point of order. As a general guide, a warm white source around 2700K will complement the silver mercury glass finish most effectively. We can advise on the right lamp when you specify.

What warranty does the Elstead Nicolls carry?

Elstead products carry a warranty of 2 to 20 years depending on the model. We'll confirm the specific warranty applicable to the Nicolls at the time of your order.
