The Project
Lightsource Studio were tasked with sourcing the lighting that the Interior Design The Midland is Manchester’s most iconic Hotel. Having hosted Rock Star’s, Politicians and even Royalty, The Midland has been a Manchester landmark since opening in 1903. While the appearance of the Hotel has changed over the years, the commitment to service and excellence has remained.
When challenged with bringing this prestigious listed building in to the 21st Century, our Interior Design client, Sundara Design, was faced with the challenge of modernising almost all interior elements of the Hotel. Keeping the ever-present charm and character of the architectural features was priority, a challenge that has been achieved by using a traditional colour palette with traditional materials. Brass, Marble, Ceramic and Dark Wooden features have been created with a blend of traditional and modern manufacturing techniques being employed.
The Lighting
The key factor in the lighting scheme was to ensure that all light fittings were controllable. Lightsource Studio have sourced lighting for The Midland Hotel in partnership with Sundara Design. Where ‘off-the-shelf’ lighting was not available, Lightsource Studio designed and manufactured the light fittings in line with the client’s specification. The large Light Fittings in the reception and public areas were specifically designed to enhance their ornate surroundings.
