elstead-franceasi-wall-lantern
Elstead Franceasi Outdoor Wall Lantern

Exterior wall lighting often falls into one of two traps: purely functional fittings that kill the mood, or decorative pieces that haven't been properly specified for outdoor use. Getting the balance right — protection, atmosphere, and architectural character — is where projects can quietly go wrong.

For outdoor wall fittings, IP rating is the starting point. IP44 means the fitting is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashing from any direction — suitable for covered and semi-exposed exterior locations. Beyond protection, the quality of light at night matters: how it scatters, what shadows it creates, and how it reads against the building facade.

The Elstead Franceasi Outdoor Wall Lantern answers both briefs. Elstead is a UK-based lighting manufacturer with a long history in heritage and traditional design. The Franceasi range draws directly on the tracery, mullions, and stonework of European castle windows — translated into an intricate metal filigree overlay that sits proud of the amber-tinted glass panels. The result is a fitting that does something few exterior lights manage: it casts decorative shadow patterns onto adjoining walls and walkways, becoming part of the architecture rather than just illuminating it.

The lantern body features a tall, rectangular form with a tiered cap and matching wall-mounting backplate, finished in Olde Bronze — a dark, rubbed metal finish that reads as authentically aged rather than simply dark. The amber-tinted glass diffuses the internal light source, reducing glare and producing a warm, golden ambient glow. The Franceasi is available in two sizes: Small and Medium, allowing the fitting to be scaled appropriately to the wall or gateway it serves.

The fitting carries an IP44 rating and is designed to accept a standard lamp (lamp not included — check fitting type and wattage before ordering). No external driver or transformer is required. For dimming, compatibility will depend on the lamp type and dimmer used; if dimming is a priority for your project, get in touch and we can advise on compatible lamp and dimmer combinations.

At Lightsource Mallorca, we work through specification decisions like this one — matching the right fitting to the right position, checking IP zones, confirming lamp compatibility, and coordinating lead times so fittings arrive when the project needs them. The Franceasi is the kind of piece that rewards careful placement: in the right spot, it earns its space every night.
