elstead-canterbury-1-light-chain-lantern-in-black
Elstead Canterbury Outdoor Ceiling Lantern

Choosing an outdoor ceiling lantern for a porch or covered entryway means balancing character with durability. Get it wrong and you end up with something that looks tired after one Mallorcan winter — or worse, something that was never rated for outdoor use at all.

For covered exterior positions, IP43 is the key rating to understand. It means the fitting is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and against water spraying at an angle — suitable for sheltered locations such as porches, loggia ceilings, and covered terraces, but not for fully exposed or rain-direct positions. Material matters too: die-cast aluminium resists corrosion far better than pressed steel, and it holds its finish over time.

The Elstead Canterbury Outdoor Ceiling Lantern is a medium-sized hanging lantern from Elstead's Canterbury range, designed with a classic British aesthetic in mind. It is constructed from die-cast aluminium and carries a manufacturer's 5-year anti-corrosion warranty — a meaningful indicator of build confidence for coastal and humid climates like Mallorca's. IP43 protection makes it appropriate for sheltered outdoor ceiling positions.

The Canterbury's form is defined by a tapered four-sided body that narrows toward the base, topped with a clean pyramidal roof. Each face features textured, water-effect glass divided by slim metal window bars — a detail rooted in traditional British lantern design that gives the fitting its quiet, considered character. The matte black metal finish grounds the form without overpowering the architecture around it.

The Canterbury is a chain-hung ceiling lantern. Lamp type and driver requirements should be confirmed at point of specification — Elstead's Canterbury range is typically designed for standard E27 lamps, allowing flexibility in light source choice. As an IP43-rated fitting, it should be installed in a sheltered position away from direct rain exposure. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

At Lightsource Mallorca, we help you match fittings like the Canterbury to the right location, lamp, and control setup before anything gets ordered. That means fewer surprises on site and a result that looks as good in year five as it did on day one. If you need guidance on lamp compatibility, dimming options, or whether this fitting suits your specific outdoor zone, we're here to help you specify with confidence.
